Using the Reading Process

When you are assigned a reading task, how do you approach it? What is your starting point? When does that process end? What strategies do you use when you are struggling to understand the text?

Every student has a reading process, meaning a phased approach to completing a reading task. That process becomes increasingly important as you encounter texts with new vocabulary and unfamiliar subjects. If you are struggling with a reading, that does not mean you are permanently stuck. You can make adjustments to your reading process to help you.

As you read the upcoming chapters about the reading process, decide which parts of your reading process you want to keep and what you would like to add or change based on the information in the chapters.

This section of the text includes the following chapters, which you should read in order, as each builds on the previous chapter.

As you learn about the reading process, practice applying the phases to a reading of your choice from this textbook.
