Introduction
How this Book is Organized
This book is organized into three sections:
- The first section is organized into 4 Modules aligning with your NOL ENG 111 course. All the materials you need for each module are organized alphabetically in each of the 4 Modules to start this handbook.
- The next section (MLA 1-6) is all about MLA and is a remix of three sections taken from MLA Style Citations by Ulrike Kestler. The rest was written by or contributed by Cathy Gaiser, NOVA English Professor and course developer, created specifically for NOVA first-year composition students. This MLA part outlines the basics of source incorporation and citation in academic writing in MLA style. There are some interactives to help you master your understanding and implementation of MLA style formatting in your own academic writing for English and composition courses. In addition, there are a few research exercises included from the Excelsior 2023 Online Writing Lab (OWL).
- The last two sections Fundamentals of College Writing and Writing Narratives come from The Rough Writer’s Guide: A Handbook for Writing Well by Dr. Karen Palmer and Dr. Sandi Van Lieu of Yavapai College, and was also written with first-year composition students in mind. This part of the book covers some basic and important grammar concepts as well as the writing process and narrative writing. It also includes a helpful grammar chapter for non-native speakers.
