1 Introduction to Primary Sources for Chapters 1-5

These sources chronicle the clash of cultures between Europeans, Africans, Asians, and North Americans.  Some documents explore cultural interchange and contention between these diverse people, while others focus on conflict between European countries as their rulers and governments attempted to impose colonial regulations and exploit colonial resources.  Finally, many of the sources document the English experience of colonization and how the growth of English colonies and societies led to imperial conflict within the British Empire.
