Chapter 7: Race and Ethnicity

7.1 Introduction

Key Questions

This chapter delves into the ways individuals and societies shape their identities in relation to ethnicity, race, and gender. Additionally, we will investigate how geographical location influences identity formation and how disparities in power manifest in the cultural environments people establish. In pursuit of these insights, we aim to address the following inquiries:

  1. What is the definition of identity, and how are identities constructed?
  2. What are the distinctions between race and ethnicity, and how does gender intersect with these concepts?
  3. How does place affect identity, and how can we observe this identity in different places?
  4. How do the lived experiences of African Americans differ from those of Anglo-Americans?
  5. How do the experiences of Apartheid in South Africa differ from the lived experiences of African Americans?
  6. How do the historical genocides and contemporary ongoing genocides compare with each other? What are some similarities?
