14.1 Introduction

Key Questions

Growth in population and wealth are driving global consumption and increasing the human impact on the environment, but not without consequences. It is estimated that about half of the world’s population experiences fresh water shortages. Ongoing development in all countries threatens biodiversity worldwide through habitat destruction, and pollution. Increased worldwide consumption results in waste.

  1. How have human activities impacted earth through land use, water use and resource extraction?
  2. How has human consumption of the natural environment challenged sustainability for both the natural and man-made environment?
