Module 4: Research & Criticism
In this module, you will explore how short fiction serves as a powerful lens for examining pressing social issues. You will engage with modern, contemporary and realist short stories on the topics of privilege and social justice, and marriage as a means of social mobility and economic necessity. The major project of this module will be a research assignment that will allow you to engage deeply with one short story and a corresponding social issue. You will conduct in-depth research into your selected story/social issue. This project will enhance your analytical and research skills and deepen your understanding of the importance of using credible sources to support your analysis. Finally, a video reflection will provide an opportunity for you to reflect on the creation and development of your research project. By the end of this module, you will have a deeper understanding of the interplay between literature and real-world issues and the value of research in enhancing your analytical skills, supporting your arguments, and deepening your insights into the short story literary form. This module will enhance your literary analysis skills and empower you to engage thoughtfully with critical discourse in the field.
