Overview
This book is intended to be a companion to the course EDE 10: English Composition Preparation, offered by Northern Virginia Community College. It is a shorter version of Becoming a Confident Reader, and I have selected readings that I will be using in the Fall 2023 semester.
The text focuses on the essential skills and practices needed upon entering the first semester of college composition, either with or without a co-requisite support course. Students need to be able to do the following:
- Build and maintain resilience as a student.
- Apply an effective reading process to college texts.
- Summarize academic writing.
- Respond to academic writing.
- Make connections among texts and between academic writing and their ideas.
- Conduct basic research.
- Analyze the techniques authors use in their writing.
- Evaluate the use of sources in a text.
