Activity 1: Examining the Gross Anatomy of Bones

1. Contrast (find 2 differences) between the epiphyseal plate and the epiphyseal line.

2. Describe the medullary cavity and include its location, the substance found in this cavity and the function of the substance.

Activity 2: Examining the Cartilage Associated with Bones

3. For each of the following, indicate whether you would find hyaline cartilage (H) or fibrocartilage (F) at this location.

    • __________ pubic symphysis
    • __________ articulating surfaces
    • __________ growth plate
    • __________ intervertebral disks
    • __________ costal cartilage
    • __________ meniscus

4. Identify the three types of cartilage and label the three cartilage images using the following terms: collagen fibers, elastic fibers, ground substance, and chondrocytes.

Cartilage Histology

5. Describe the features of hyaline and fibrocartilage by filling in the chart below.

Hyaline Cartilage Fibrocartilage
Amount of
ground
substance
Amount of
fibers
Function
Activity 3: Examining the Microscopic Histology of Bones

6. Describe the basic structural similarities and differences between spongy bone and compact bone. Use the histology images below to help you answer this question.

Spongy Versus Compact Bone

Activity 4: Examining the Components of Bone

7. Briefly describe the effect of heat on bone matrix.

8. Briefly describe the effect of acid on bone matrix.

Putting it all Together

9. This patient has low blood calcium levels and low estrogen levels. How would these affect the bony matrix?
